‘Mary, the Mother of God, as Ascetic Virgin in Byzantine and Orthodox Tradition’

Mary B. Cunningham is an Honorary Associate Professor of Historical Theology at the University of Nottingham. She is the recent author of The Virgin Mary in Byzantium, c.400-1000: hymns, homilies and hagiography, Cambridge, CUP, 2022. Mary is a specialist of Byzantine preaching, homiletics and rhetorical techniques and has contributed many articles on the subject. In 1998, she co-edited the first volume of the Brill series “A New History of the Sermon” with P. Allen (Preacher and audience: studies in early Christian and Byzantine homelitics, Leiden, Brill). With E. Theokritoff, she published The Cambridge Companion to Orthodox Christian Theology, Cambridge, CUP, in 2008. Her current research topics include a translation and a commentary of Epiphanios of Kallistratos’s Life of the Virgin Mary (early 9th century) to appear in the series Translated Texts for Byzantinists (Liverpool University Press) in June 2023.

The lecture will be followed by a cheese and wine reception. All welcome.
